Michael Turner, you'll be missed

Every once in a while, a person gets the chance to actually meet their role model. Sometimes the meeting can flip your impressions of the person, because they were simply not the person you believed them to be. Such was not the case when our daughter finally met Michael Turner.

Even before we opened our comics store, our daughter held a special appreciation for the art of Michael Turner. She treasured the Supergirl covers of his creation, along with the Superman/Batman story of Kara's return. I think our daughter identified with Supergirl, but Mr. Turner's artwork transcended that, and her fascination instead turned to the artist. Once we opened our store, she saved her money and purchased various covers done by the artist extraordinaire who was Michael Turner. So, when we decided to take our 2006 vacation to ComiCon in San Diego, the top priority for her was actually meeting her idol.

Imagine a little girl's heartbreak when we found out that Michael was not scheduled to appear at the Aspen booth, due to the return of his cancer. For her, the trip was wasted, and she simply had to hang around the convention with her parents and brothers, and see the things and people that they wanted. The joy of attending the convention was all but lost to her.

But, a surprising set of circumstances changed all that. We stopped at the Wizard booth, simply to make contacts for our new store, and our daughter noticed a signed copy of the Wizard profile of Michael Turner, along with an unsigned copy of the Apspen variant for Civil War #1. Of course, we purchased those items for her, after relating the whole story to the Wizard rep. Amazingly, he even gave us quite the deal on the items, since it was the little girl who was purchasing items signed by her superstar idol. But most of all, he imparted a little known secret that Michael Turner, who loved his fans so much, was actually going to make an unscheduled appearance at the Aspen booth at 9am the next morning. He advised us to get there early, and book a spot in line.

From our hotel room that night, we planned out our convention activities for the next day. Top of the list was the Aspen booth at 9 am, no matter what else was scheduled. And the next day, we were one of the first of the groups that just sort of hung out around the Aspen booth. And then the magic happened. The workers of the booth let the people in the near vicinity know that they were now "officially" in line to meet Michael Turner when he arrived. We were advised not to leave the area, or we would loose our place in line. That left me scrambling to find items on the convention floor that our daughter could get signed. Of course, she had her Wizard book on Michael Turner, but that already had his signature.

To say our daughter was star-struck was an understatement. However, when she finally did get to meet Mr. Turner, he was the most gracious celebrity I have ever personally encountered. His smile was genuine, and he truly talked to each and every fan that had waited for him. Our daughter was no exception. And although her Wizard book had already been signed, Michael created a personalized message in it for our little girl that she will treasure forever. Our little girl got the chance to meet her role model, and he was exactly the person she had imagined. Not many people get that chance in life.

This weekend, we learned that Michael Turner had passed away at the very young age of 37. Our daughter is, of course, extremely heart-broken. However, she is thankful that she did indeed get the opportunity to meet and talk with her idol, even if it was for just a very short meeting. And those are her words, which speak more about Michael Turner than I ever could.

And it all leads into one of the landmark moments of Marvel history, the Comics Code defying "drug" issues. There's no question Stan Lee's Marvel Comics strove for a relevance that the competition could only dream of - and with AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #96-98, that mission was placed front and center: Peter Parker's best friend, Harry Osborn, was revealed to be a drug addict. Letting a battle with Spidey's nemesis, the Green Goblin, take a back seat to the personal drama that scourged the real-life streets of the reader's world, the Lee/Kane/Romita team set a new standard for the mainstream's relevance. Stan Lee pens some of his greatest scripts, chock full of edge-of-your-seat drama and up-to-the-moment politics, while the incomparable artistic team-up of John Romita and Gil Kane launches into the most lavishly illustrated and panel-bursting artwork to ever grace the pages of a Marvel comic. There's no denying it, True Believer, these are Masterworks one and all! Collecting THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #88-99.256 PGS./All Ages …$54.99 ISBN: 978-0-7851-2932-5

DC Comics Solicitations for August 2008

Something new for the blog starting this month... Previews Comics Solicitations. We are beginning with the Previews for August 2008.
We had tried dedicating a full web page to each month's Previews, but that became a nightmare to manage. So, in a simplified approach, we'll add the listings to our blog once a month for DC and Marvel Solications. We'll see if the demand justifies the time required to create these entries.

So, if there is something on this list that you would like added to your subscription list or special ordered, please let us know at comics@thelegendshop.com.

Also note, since we are "Arizona's Family-Friendly Comic Store", we do not stock many of the mature titles, and they will need to be special ordered. Age verificaton will be required for all mature titles. All orders should be recieved by June 21 to ensure timely delivery to our store. We are not responsible for solicitation errors, delivery delays or cancellations by the publishers.

So, enough of the introductory talk. Let the Previews begin!

Iron Man in Theatres May 2nd

The first real blockbuster superhero movie for this summer opens this weekend: Iron Man. This could be the start of another franchise to equal Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, and Superman franchises. In our store, the iron crusader seems to have lost a bit of steam in sales, most likely due to fallout from his role in Civil War last year. But, with this movie coming out, Marvel is betting on a resurgence in popularity for the red and gold suited hero, and a new ongoing Iron Man title plus a couple of limited series are being released.

Robert Downey, Jr plays the role of Tony Stark, billionaire weapons maker (I've heard that the character of Stark was loosely based on the one and only Howard Hughes). Stark is shot down in Afganistan by a group of terrorists called the "10 rings" (anybody wanna bet there'll be a link to a sequel with the Mandarin?), using his own weapon technology. Stark is imprisoned and tasked with creating missles for this terrorist group, but instead builds himself a suit of armor to break free of the prison. If you know Robert Downey, Jr's history, and the background of Tony Stark, this could be called inspired casting.

Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper Potts for the female lead, and Jeff Bridges plays a baddie. Add in Terence Howard as James Rhodes (maybe a War Machine sequel?) for a pretty good cast.

This film is definitely on the must see list. Unfortunately, timing is an issue for us. It comes out the day before Free Comic Book Day! So much for seeing it opening night. However, I will rate this as a film for viewing on Opening Weekend. Probably Sunday, as my family and I try to recover from the activities around FCBD.

If you see it, let us know what you think.

BTW - Check out the Iron Man toys at Burger King. The 3-D Iron Man puzzle is really, really cool! We have one hanging in the store now.

Summer Superhero Movies

Spring is almost over (at least here in Phoenix), and everyone knows what that brings to the comic book world...

No, not Free Comic Book Day! (But that's a very good guess, and it happens on May 3rd this year)

Summer Movies full of Superheroes!

And lookit this... the first one is released this weekend, March 28th! And what would you think it would be called? Superhero Movie, of course.

OK, perhaps not an opening night must have, but for true comic fans, this parody might be fun. It's brought to us by the same folks who spun the Scary Movie franchise, so you can guess the level of humor. Loosely based on mainly Marvel movies such as Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and X-Men franchises, it could be a way to let loose for about an hour and a half on a weekend. You know, the plot is that a guy is bitten by a dragonfly and obtains powers, just like in so many other successful movie franchises. Could there be a sequel in the making?

Seriously, though (but please don't take this movie that way), it could be some fun and is rated a PG-13 for crude and sexual content, comic violence, drug references and language. So it may not be suitable for the younger audience. Our kids are almost all teenagers at this point, and really into comics, so they'll definitely want to see this one.

I have to tell you, though, a couple of the reasons I personally plan to see it (besides just needing an escapist weekend), are the casting of Leslie Neilsen (a favorite of mine since Forbidden Planet) and Brent Spiner (Data, of Star Trek fame). Oh yeah, Pamela Anderson is in it, too. I haven't been to the movies in a while, and it may take just a simple, riduculous movie to get me there.

We'll use a simple rating scale here at Comics Legends and Heroes. Basically, when would we see the movie. The categories will be: Opening Night, Opening Weekend, Full Price, Matinee, DVD Purchase, or Rental.
Superhero Movie would generally rate simply as a Rental for me. But, because I need to blow off some stress in my life, it's the first Superhero movie of the year, and it has Leslie Neilsen and Brent Spiner, I'm going to step out on a limb and rate it: Matinee
Let us know what you think if you go see it!

The Best Of... Batman Statues

OK, time to try something new for our blog. I'm going to call it "The Best Of...". I'll pick a product, and give you what I think is my favorite example, and why. Those of you with comic dens will understand this one.

This week, I would like to focus on Batman statues. What would you say is the finest example of a great Batman Statue?

For me, I have had many favorites. The first I fell in love with was the Batman Black and White statue by Brian Bolland. This is an extremely fine statue of the Batman simply standing there. That's right, just standing there. Like, what you would see if you were the criminal running scared, rounded the corner after running forever, looked up and saw... the Batman.

It was my favorite statue, that is, until I carried that thing around for three days at the 2006 Comic Con just to get Mr. Bolland's signature on it. And then, when I finally found him in artist alley, he told me he was too busy catching up on his sketches (which he was being paid for) to sign the base of my statue. So, my tired arm and I lugged that thing the mile and a half back to my car and discontinued carrying it around the San Diego Convention Center floor. Right then and there I decided that I didn't like Mr. Bolland very much since he couldn't take the time to give a fan an autograph, and that this particular statue was no longer my favorite. Any of you who have walked the SDCC with a statue in hand will understand.

So, I guess my next favorite was influenced by a creator being an exceptionally nice guy, Steve Rude. I had had some transactions and meetings with The Dude (as he lives in Arizona), and had generally regarded him as a very nice and talented artist. About the time that Mr. Rude agreed to appear in our store for the 2007 Free Comic Book Day event, DC Direct released his version of the Batman Black and White Statue. The lines are classic, and the statue captures the motion of Batman's flowing cape. Steve has captured the original Batman at his finest. I look forward to displaying this statue along with the upcoming Bob Kane black and white statue. They will be quite a pair! And you know what? Steve Rude was happy to sign the base of my statue!

But, I have to admit... I have a statue that I prefer over both my previous favorites. And, it's not even made of porcelain! Simple PVC! But, imagine, a 1/6 scale statue for under $100! That is the classic Batman statue by Kotobukiya, and my new favorite. This statue also features beautiful movement of Batman's cape, combined with a stance of Batman that you simply wouldn't want to see if you were the bad guy! And although I prefer the Batman's colors to be more black and grey instead of the blue, I can live with the color shift on this statue. But gosh, if I had two, I know a certain artist who could airbrush it black for me. Hmmm, that could quite possibly make the most perfect Batman statue of all.

What do you think? What is your favorite Batman statue? Go back as far as you'd like, and please post photos if you can.
